Edith says: "Dürer's famous print of the rhino was based on reports of one which was in Lisbon in 1515 and was the first living rhino in Europe since Roman times. The animal died in a shipwreck on its way to be given as a gift to the Pope. I was intrigued by the idea of a rumour of an animal. The real, massive, fleshy animal exoticised and diminished by its multiple representation in print and report. It's real existence hardly mattered by a certain point. Indian rhinoceroses are endangered, so this was also a way for me to explore the idea of extinction."
