Edith says: "The bones are painted from a human skeleton which my grandmother bought (when that was legal) for medical reference. Images of bones obviously evoke death, but their forms are determined by their function to support life. I tried to keep this tension in mind when painting them.


"I wanted the paintings to be equal parts bone and water, as it were. Sometimes they were too watery and didn't describe the bone enough, sometimes I over-controlled the paint and lost the sense of water. This one, I feel, got the balance just right."
